What's the best portable fire pit for camping?

A portable camping fire pit needs to pack small, set up fast and handle real heat. The Ol' Mate is a collapsible, flat pack fire pit that folds to 3cm thick (57 x 33cm) and weighs 11kg. It locks together in seconds and packs into its own canvas carry bag.

Is the Ol' Mate a good caravan fire pit?

Yes. It folds flat enough to slide into a caravan boot, canopy or drawer system, and the carry bag keeps soot off everything else in the van. It's easy to carry to the campsite, and quick to pack away when it's time to move on.

Can I cook on a fire pit?

Yes, the Ol' Mate is a fire pit grill as well as a fire pit. It comes with a removable 3mm steel BBQ hot plate (52 x 31cm) for steaks, eggs and bacon. It also has built-in spit kit adaptors that turn it into a fire pit rotisserie with a battery-operated rotisserie (sold separately).

What's the difference between the Ol' Mate and the Campfire Grill Plate?

The Ol' Mate is a complete fire pit with a BBQ hot plate. The Heavy Duty Campfire Grill Plate is a stand-alone camping BBQ plate that sits over any campfire. It's half hot plate and half grill, and it has foldable legs that lock solid and never rattle in transit.

Do I need a fire pit mat?

The Ol' Mate comes with its own ash tray base. It catches loose ash and embers, and with a splash of water in the tray it helps stop scorch marks on the grass underneath.

How do I season a BBQ plate?

Our plates are raw mild steel with no chemical coatings or paint, so seasoning builds a natural non-stick surface. The Ol' Mate's light vegetable oil coating from manufacturing burns off during the first fire. After that, heat the plate, wipe on a thin coat of cooking oil and let it smoke off. Repeat a few times.

How do I clean a BBQ plate and stop it rusting?

Scrape the plate while it's still warm, wipe it down, and give it a light coat of oil before packing it away. If rust appears, scrub it off with steel wool and re-season the plate.

How do I start a fire in a fire pit?

Check local fire restrictions first. Put dry kindling in the centre of the pit with a firelighter or scrunched paper, light it, then add small pieces of dry wood. Add larger pieces once it's burning well.

How do I put out a fire pit?

Let the wood burn down, then pour water over the coals and stir them. Keep adding water until everything is cool to touch. Never bury hot coals, and never leave a fire pit burning unattended.
